3 Things To Look For In A Home To Grow Old In

December 16, 2020 by Curtis Leave a Comment

When purchasing a new home, there’s a lot to consider as far as features and layout are concerned. Especially if you have young or older people who will be living in the home, you really need to make sure that they’ll be safely accommodated in the space. So if you’re planning to buy a home that you’ll stay in for the rest of your life, you’ll need to make sure that the home fits you both now and in the future.

To help you in finding this house, here are three things to look for in a home to grow old in.

Easy Access Into The Home

Your search for the perfect home for senior citizens starts before you even enter the house.

According to Kelsey Lindsey, a contributor to Washingtonian.com, a home that will work well for the elderly will be easy to get into from the outside. This means that you don’t want a home that has too many stairs leading to the front door. You also want to look for something that doesn’t have steep grades, as slipping and falling can be dangerous as you get older. And finally, you’ll want to find a home that has close parking so that you don’t have to walk outside in the elements too much before getting to your car.

Opt For An Open Floor Plan

As you get older, you might start to have issues with mobility. Knowing this before it becomes an issue can help you find a home that will be safe for you if and when you need accommodation.

Just like in facilities meant for elderly living, your home should have enough space so that you can easily maneuver a walker or wheelchair around. To make this possible, Liz Weston, a contributor to NerdWallet.com, suggests that you try to find a house with an open floor plan. In these types of homes, there are far fewer walls or doorways to have to go through, which will make it much easier to get around if you need help walking around.

Check The Bathrooms For Safety

Bathrooms are one of the most dangerous places in a home for senior citizens. Because the floors are often slippery when wet, it’s important that you choose a home with a bathroom that will reduce your risk of getting hurt.

According to Brandon Ballenger, a contributor to Money Talks News, the most ideal features in a bathroom that you can age into is a curbless shower or a walk-in tub. These adjustments and fixtures will make it so you won’t have to ever really be standing on one foot on a slippery bathroom floor.

If you’re wanting to buy a home that you can continue to safely live in when you’re retired, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you find the right property.
