How To Maintain Your Home

November 20, 2020 by Curtis Leave a Comment

Owning a home is the dream of countless millions across the world. It represents a space that you can call your own, where you’re able to do just about anything you want. And having a solid house is part of the dream, but if you want to keep the house standing, it does require performing some routine maintenance. Not only will this save you money in the long run, but if you ever decide to sell the house for greener pastures, you can ask for a higher price.

These are some basic maintenance tasks that you will want to perform every now and again to ensure your home is in great shape.

Regular Painting

When we wash a car, we always use a wax at the end to make sure the paintwork is protected from the elements, and to stop rust from forming. This is no different from a house, and painting the external walls every five years or so can seriously cut back on overall damage to the house. It might seem expensive and exhausting to do this every 5 years, but it means having a house that will stand up against the elements without a problem. If your house is made of wood, then regularly varnishing it and adding fire-retardant sealant to the wood is absolutely mandatory.

Leaky Piping

Unless you’re living off of the grid, it’s safe to assume that you’re getting your water from the local municipality, which means that the water pressure is constant, and this can lead to leaky pipes and faucets. The problems that can arise from these two scenarios don’t just mean a bigger water bill, but also serious damage that can cost thousands to repair. Keep an eye out for any excess water anywhere in your home, especially wherever the geyser may be sitting if you use one. Geysers are notorious for springing a leak, and it doesn’t take long for their overflow tray to, well, overflow, and begin spilling water everywhere, leading to damage and rot.

Window Putty

Most windows are held in place by a special putty that dries solid a few hours after applications. This putty can last years, but it will eventually begin to degrade, which can be accelerated by lots of rain and sun exposure. This putty is extremely cheap and widely available and can be used to replace old putty that’s no longer working. It’s a good idea to learn how to properly apply it, too, as it can help in the event that one of your windows is broken.

Fixing The Roof

The roof is the barrier between cold rain and our beds, and it’s vitally important that we keep our wedding tents roof in brilliant shape all year. Don’t wait for a drip to form, but rather climb on to your roof every few months and make sure that there are no cracks forming in the shingles or slats, and make sure to sign up now for any tips to help you out. Prevention is always better than cure and keeping your roof watertight is a really good way of avoiding headaches down the road.
