Best Ways To Solve Nonograms

March 16, 2021 by Curtis Leave a Comment

One of the oldest and exciting puzzle games is the Nonogram. This game is also known as Picture cross, Hanjie, Griddler, or cross numbers. It originated from Japan. So, what is Nonogram, and how can you solve it quickly and efficiently? Well, let’s find out.

What is a Nonogram?

According to the instructions given, a Nonogram is a grid-based logic puzzle game that you solve by coloring in squares in the grid. Once you have finished, you will end up with a picture. This puzzle game is entertaining and mind-teasing. However, you should note that not all levels will be manageable; some will be quite challenging.

How to solve Nonogram

One of the best ways to solve Nonogram puzzles is by considering each row and column separately with a line approach. The solved line stores the data about potential colors for a particular cell. This way, your computer won’t have to derive the information from the calculated matrix.

Another technique you can use to solve a Nonogram puzzle is using a priority queue data structure, where every element could have a priority associated with them. This way, high priority cells, significantly longer ones, are addressed in the beginning. However, this may soon become empty, and no puzzle to solve.

There are plenty of methods that can help you solve a Nonogram. Whichever method you choose to use does not matter as long as you understand it and achieve the objective of the game, which is to color in squares in the grid according to the instructions given. It’s worth mentioning that solving a Nonogram puzzle gets easier as you continue playing this fun and engaging puzzle game.

If you want to solve your Nonogram with ease, consider the following points.

  • Don’t mind the color of the blocks

Some of the blocks in your Nonogram puzzle might be black, white, or even grey. However, you should not pay too much attention to the color of the blocks because they don’t matter. All that matters is the number of consecutive blocks you have to match the numbers on the side. So if you spot blocks of different colors in a row, don’t bother about them too much since they are there for the bigger picture.

  • Pay attention to the empty space

Whenever you solve a puzzle, you will find that it has one or many empty blocks between the numbered blocks. So, if you have ten blocks per vertical line and ten per horizontal line and you need to solve a ten puzzle, there will be no spce left.

  • Practice! Practice

One of the best ways you can become a pro-puzzler is by practicing a lot. As always, practice makes perfect. No one should lie to you that you will never get stuck in a Nonogram; there will be levels that you won’t be seeing any progress. That’s why you need to practice more. You can even read books or articles online about solving a Nonogram puzzle.
