Is Dry Eye the Most Common Eye Issue?

Dry eye syndrome is a common medical condition that affects millions of people annually. It happens when the eyes cannot produce quality tears to properly lubricate the eyes and protect them from irritants such as dust and grime. This instability can lead to inflammation and damage to the eye’s surface. While dry eyes aren’t life-threatening, they can tremendously affect a person’s quality of life.

Several surgical and non-invasive procedures are available to manage dry eyes. One of the most efficient non-invasive methods is IPL treatment for dry eyes. This entails using pulsed light to treat the underlying cause of dry eyes, a problem in the meibomian gland. People with dry eyes can suffer from stringy mucus around the eyes, repetitive eye irritation, light sensitivity, and blurred vision.

Those who wish to manage their dry eyes properly must work with their eye specialist to develop a personalized treatment plan. This plan can specifically address the concerns of individuals who suffer from such a condition.

Here are some ways to manage dry eyes.

Use an air filter and a humidifier

Dry eyes happen when the liquid protecting the eyes evaporates quickly. A humidifier will increase the amount of moisture in the immediate vicinity and improve the overall air quality. This decreases the chances of the eyes becoming irritated as the moisture can regulate the particulates in the air. Air filters will also trap microparticles that can irritate.

Avoid too much screen time

Staring too long at a screen can put enough eye strain and cause dry eyes. It’s necessary to take a break every 20 minutes, as the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommended. They suggest staring at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds to relieve the strain on your eyes.

Eat healthily

Those with dry eye syndrome can enjoy better eye lubrication if they eat more fish and gluten-free food. Fish contain omega-3 acids, which are essential to producing the eye’s oil film in the meibomian glands. Eating gluten-free food can eliminate the chances of an individual ingesting food that can irritate. In addition, some studies suggest that a Mediterranean diet can improve overall eye health.

Get better sleep

Not getting enough sleep also negatively affects eye health. Those who don’t get enough sleep show symptoms of decreased tear production and increased epithelial cell defects in the cornea. Enjoying adequate sleep helps the eyes repair minor concerns due to daily exposure, so it’s essential to grab enough shuteye to help the eyes regenerate.

Use a warm compress

One of the best ways to manage dry eyes is to use a warm compress. Find the right temperature balance that is hot enough to injure and just enough to be therapeutic. Cover the eyes for at least five minutes to help stimulate the glands to produce more quality tears and remove accumulated grit and grime under the eyelids.

Conclusions

While dry eyes are among the most prevalent eye conditions affecting millions of people annually, they can be easily managed. Those who suffer from dry eyes can consult specialists about developing a personalized eye management plan.
