The Best There Ever Was, a collection of the best of the best of classic recordings from the 1920s & 1930s, featuring the 20 all-time greatest early rural blues performers, each doing one of their best performances! |
| Yazoo's
mission has been, and will continue to be, to make available
as many classic performances of early rural American and ethnic
music as we can and at the highest standards we possibly can. The
goal is to broadly disseminate these wonderful performances, the
likes of which will not be seen again, and to insure their preservation
in excellent sound quality via these CDs, as in many cases only
one to five copies of the original 78 rpm recordings have survived.
The thousands of traditionally based performances of the 1920s and
30s comprise a grand body of tunes and songs distilled over many
generation and endlessly enriched by the rural musician's uninhibited
free-form approach to music. These performances are amazingly both
joyous and plaintive at one and the same time and often stunning
in their unbridled power, and their rhythms are of such a delightful
nature as to animate the spirit as well as the legs. We are blessed
to have these remarkable old recordings still with us, and now preserved
on these CDs, in all their glory, forever. |

"You
don't have to go to the ends of the earth to encounter exotic music.
Yazoo has been doing yeoman's service for America's home grown traditional
music for decades. Its catalog reaches back through time to rediscover
the rural roots of our music."
- The New Yorker |
| "In
traditional music circles the 1990s and beyond may well be called
the 'Yazoo Years,' as their ongoing anthologies have become the
standards by which to judge all others." - Victory Music Review
