Benny Thomasson and Dick Barrett
are featured here in a rare concert of
Texas fiddling filmed in the early 1970s. Benny Thomasson was
born in 1909 and grew up in the cattle country south of Abilene,
Texas. Many of the tunes in his extensive repertoire can be traced
back to his father and grandfather. His father luke was a well
known fiddler, and Benny remembered at an early age listening
to his father "working tunes out" and trying to improve
on them. Although Benny has been playing fiddle from the time
he could hold one up without droppping it, he didn't enter his
first big contest until the late 1920s. When he didn't receive
any notice in that competition, he went home and resolved to work
up variation son the old tunes until he got the recognition he
sought, and he never stopped. Always willing to teach and share
his style with others, over the years Benny was instrumental in
disseminating this Texas-based style that wins so many major fiddle
competitions around the U.S. today. Dick Barrett is one of contemporary
America's premier exponents of Texas style fiddling and has taken
top prize in countless competitions.
